Signs It's Time to Upgrade Your Wardrobe

When was the last time you went through your wardrobe and tried on your clothes? Unfortunately, most people don't get a chance to do it often enough and then they end up with a whole bunch of clothes that no longer fit, that they’re hanging onto ‘just in case they fit one day’ or simply just don't match the current fashion trends. Of course, you don't have to be trendy to wear nice clothing. You can wear nice things every single day and as long as you feel comfortable in them, that's what counts the most.

However, you might be of the opinion that it’s time for a wardrobe shakeup and you wouldn't be wrong in your assessment. You need to think about whether the cute sweaters that were cute ten years ago still make you feel cute now. You have to try the boots that you once wore with skirts and dresses and determine how you feel about them on your current body. That’s the one mistake people make: they don't try their clothes on often enough to know whether they are fine or not. So, let’s take a look at the clear signs that you are in dire need of a wardrobe upgrade:

  • Getting dressed is something you’re starting to dread. Are you sifting through your drawers and cupboards to feel inspired? You’re dreading opening the doors because in your mind, you don't have anything to wear anyway so it’s frustrating! Feeling like you have nothing to wear can make you feel anxious and upset but you don't have to feel that way for long. Your current clothing may not make you feel all that confident, but if you are trying things on, you can tell whether you’re going to have an enjoyable experience or not. If you’re dreading getting ready for the day, you need to assess what you’ve got versus what you want to wear.

  • The clothes you do have are damaged. When you wear your clothes often enough, you're going to experience wearing down. That means faded materials, holes in the clothing and a general wearing down that can make you feel sloppy. It also looks pretty unprofessional, and you can easily avoid that by ensuring that your clothing is repaired or replaced regularly enough. If you’re putting clothing in a dryer, making sure that things are zipped up will prevent them from being torn, too. You want to show others - and yourself - that you care about what your clothes look like. You can’t do that if they’re ill-fitting and faded.

  • The clothes in the wardrobe don't fit you anymore. It’s something we all do: we hang onto items that haven't fit us for a long time and then wonder why we don't have anything to wear. If you haven't been shopping for a while you might find that the clothes that fit you once are no longer going to fit you, and that means you’re going to fail to flatter your figure. You deserve to feel good, not uncomfortable, and that means a shopping trip is on the horizon. You need to go to the stores and try on new clothing so that you can learn to feel better in yourself. Our bodies are constantly changing and that means dressing for the body you have rather than hanging out for the body you want!

  • Everyone is giving you fashion advice. It may not feel like it’s particularly well-meaning, but everyone around you is dropping gentle hints that your clothing needs an upgrade. We always have at least one person who thinks it’s their right to comment on your clothing and your look, right? Well, if that person is speaking up and telling you what they think you should wear, it may be time to take heed. You don't have to listen all of the time, but if you’re constantly bombarded in comments, then it might be worth paying some attention. Take the advice from actual friends who really do mean well.

  • You’re hanging onto high school items. Oh, we all have a dress that made us feel our best, but if that was years ago when you were in high school, then it’s time for an upgrade. You’re not a high schooler anymore, and fashion styles, bodies and more are always evolving and changing. If your fashion sense has shifted and the trends have shifted, then you should think about whether the clothes you are holding onto are even going to fit in with the life you live right now. Having too many outdated items in the wardrobe can also cause some angst when you realize you are stuck in the past!

  • You just need a switch-out. Are you harboring tons of clothing that you haven't worn in years? Well, the best thing that you can do is get everything out of the wardrobe, try it all on and then move those items that do fit, do look good and work with the trends to the front of the wardrobe. This will ensure that you are able to feel like you can upgrade your wardrobe with the things that you already have, and that can feel good! You don't have to spend too much money to refresh it and purging the unused items will help you to feel like you’re letting go of a huge burden.

  • Your style has upgraded. Your current wardrobe is supposed to reflect you and your personality. It’s supposed to make you feel good and reflect the changes you’ve been through as you age. You might once have loved vibrant colors, but if you’re not a fan of those right now, then you can guarantee that your wardrobe won’t match it, either. A good sign it’s time for an overhaul is that you have changed and adapted your style as you age, and if you find yourself reaching for the same few items, it’s time to get over that and pick something new.

  • You don't have a good capsule wardrobe. You should have a working capsule wardrobe that allows you to wear good clothing for work that makes you feel professional and strong. Your capsule wardrobe will have certain key pieces and if you don't have these, you’re going to feel that difference pretty quickly when you’re lacking at work. If you want to rule the boardroom, you need to look and feel good and your wardrobe is going to help you with that.

  • It's been a while since you took yourself shopping. A form of self-care, shopping is going to show you what you’re missing. Fashion trends adjust and change through the years and your wardrobe is definitely not going to keep up with that if you’re not shopping. You need to go and find the items that are not only on trend, but that look good on you right now. If you haven't taken yourself for a good shopping trip in a long time, then it’s about time you go and do that!

Now that you have read through these signs, do you think it’s time for an upgrade? Go through your wardrobe as soon as you can and figure out whether you recognize the signs that your wardrobe is ready to undergo a makeover of all makeovers! If you’re sick of your clothing, you need to make a change. There is no use in wearing clothes that will make you feel less than confident or less than beautiful.
