How to Find and Shop Your Style Within Any Price Segment

Have you ever admired another person’s style? Followed someone on Instagram and tried to copy their outfits? It is possible that some of your attempts were successful, and it is also likely that seemingly the same outfit did not look quite the same on you. Why is that you think? There are a couple of possible answers here but let’s focus on one of them today.

Each and every one of us is unique; what works on someone else, may not necessarily work on you for many reasons. Among them are that your height may be different, your legs may be longer or shorter, your waistline not quite as thin, or you may not have the same complexion or hair. You may try to wear a certain color but it just does not look as stunning on you as it does on a woman at your office. Sound familiar? The fashion blogger you admire on a social media network or that woman at your office seem to know some secret that they apply every day to look amazing. The answer is they have their personal style and they wear it confidently.

I’d like to offer you some advice to help guide you on the path towards finding your personal style. Find some quiet time, sit down, and try to answer the following questions:

What do you like? I know, this is very broad so, for example, think what style or color(s) you like. Do you prefer pants or skirts? Maybe you are a jeans and blazer kind of person? Do you wear jewelry? If so, what kind? Do you like accessories such as handbags or belts? If so, what kind?
What looks good on you? For example, do you look good in red? Do pencil skirts or flowy A-line skirts suit you better?
What clothes are appropriate for your lifestyle? Are you a career woman or a stay-at-home mom? Are you a business owner who runs her business out of her home? Where do you go during the day?

This probably seems like a lot of work for you now. However, this exercise will help you to get to know yourself better. Your job is to know what you truly like rather than what you think you may like because it looks good on someone else. You can borrow an outfit idea and see if it works for you, and it is okay to let it go if it doesn’t. It would be helpful to create a mood board of things that inspire you. It does not have to only contain outfits but also colors, makeup, accessories, jewelry,nature, travel, décor or architecture.

Try to think of 5-10 adjectives you would like to describe your style or the kind of impression you want to produce. What kind of clothes and/or accessories will help you produce this impression? Do you want to exude confidence? Then wearing a blazer and some quality accessories such as a watch and a handbag may help you achieve that. Do you want to appear feminine and fragile? Wearing a silk dress that drapes beautifully may be your choice here.

Also, think about potential issues that your current wardrobe may have. For example, you own ten pairs of jeans and 5 gray sweaters so no matter which pair and sweater you wear, there’s no variety. Or, it’s been two years since you set your foot in the office yet the rail in your closet is jam-packed with blazers while you lounge in sweatpants in front of the computer every day. It may seem like you own a lot of clothes but in reality you don’t wear any of them.

Now, some may object that one can only be stylish/fashionable if they have money to spend on designer clothing and accessories. I am here to tell you that it is not the case these days. Have you noticed that it is now okay for one designer to copy another designer’s creations? For example, a copy of the (previously) highly desired Bottega Veneta soft pouch bag is pretty much available “at a local retailer near you”. Have you noticed the speed at which mass retailers such as Zara and Mango produce clothes and accessories that you just saw at a recent runway show? My point is you can find anything you want at the price you are willing to pay, and that is awesome news!

Let me demonstrate what I mean by sharing a few examples of clothes and accessories within a wide range of prices. Since spring is upon us, let me share a few spring/summer finds.
