STYLE TIP

Fall/Winter 2022-2023 Fashion Trends and How to Wear Them

By Yuliya Ustsinenka

With temperatures still above 70F in Boston, it is still quite difficult to think about chunky knits, coats and boots for fall. However, you will stand a better chance of scoring your size and having a broader selection if you go shopping early and come prepared. Whether you are a die-hard fashionista who loves to incorporate the hottest trends in her wardrobe, or you simply want to look young and modern, let’s discuss some fall/winter runway trends and get inspired for the season. Fashion designers presented plenty of pretty/feminine/intriguing pieces on the runway this season that would also be impractical and completely inappropriate for the kind of fall and winter we have in Boston. To give you some idea, models walked down the runway wearing beautiful metallic mesh skirts at Prada, breathtaking black chiffon dresses at Dior, an abundance of feathers at Elie Saab, and ultra minis at Miu Miu and Diesel.

Let’s instead focus on mostly “long” trends that are fun and weather appropriate:

Bomber jackets have graced many runways over the last couple of years, making them a so-called “long” trend. For context, a bomber jacket will never go out of style, and it will always exist in designer fall collections; however, it may become a hot trend (such as now) or it may take a back seat for a little while. This fall/winter, models wore bomber jackets decorated with feathers at Prada, sequin embellished jackets at Ellie Saab; embroidered at Dior, and even fuzzy alpaca bomber jackets at both Dior and Max Mara. If you don’t own a bomber jacket and would like to buy one this season, choose a basic black or khaki bomber in a regular or slightly longer length to go with all your basics. Go for colorful and/or cropped length if you already own a basic model and also know how to make color work in your wardrobe. You can create sporty looks by paring up your bomber jacket with jeans and sneakers, or you can lean in a sport chic direction and wear it with a knit dress and high heels.

Maxi Length, particularly in coats, was presented at Max Mara, Saint Laurent, and a number of other brands. This is an example of a trend that is new and oh so wearable and practical this season! You do not have to worry about this length going out of style as it will likely stay with us for a little while, and it is something that will always come back.

It won’t be fall without beautiful knitwear. Get inspired by the thick yet refined and sculptured knits from the runway. Fall knits can be worn on their own or layered over other pieces such as shirts and dresses. Don’t be afraid to juxtapose chunky sweaters with delicate skirts and biker boots and play up textures in your outfit by combining chucky knits with the next trend.

Leather & eco-leather: from single items to total looks, leather clothing items have been with us for several seasons (hint: another long trend). Hues of caramel or khaki are just as versatile as black and will also make you stand out from the crowd. For a day-to-day look, skip the total look in leather and wear one leather item such as leather pants with a blazer or hoodie.

Corset tops may not sound like an appropriate clothing item for the cold season but get inspired by designer looks that follow and layer corsets over oxford shirts and other clothes or introduce this trend into your wardrobe by purchasing a pretty dress with a corset detail. This will likely be a short trend so if you are considering incorporating this trend into your wardrobe, go for a basic model that you can layer under shirts and blazers later.

Minimalism continues on as another long trend this season as well. With its simple silouettes and unadorned designed the focus in on cut and details.

With the start of the school year, preppy looks mixed with a dash of sport were also present in a few designer collections. If you follow street stylers and fashion influencers, you will observe that Miu Miu carried this trend over from its spring/summer collection this year. If you wear preppy styles on a regular basis, you may want to consider a bomber jacket in this style as opposed to a more basic model.

Monochrome looks were present in almost every collection. Total black in particular was extremely popular with designers this season. When building a monochrome look, go for different textures such as mixing leather, suede, knitwear, silk and other fabrics, and layer on jewelry and trendy accessories.

Structured shoulders and oversized silhouettes have been with us for quite some time. That said, it seems that designers are gradually pivoting towards more tailored looks and accentuating a natural waist line – some collections even reminded of the 80s power dressing.

As for colors, there was a lot of black on the runway this season. Beyond that, red and yellow stood out in quite a few collections as well. And Valentino sent models dressed in hot pink down a pink runway lit with pink lights. So have fun and elevate your fall looks this season!
